Gender Roles in Darfur

Today I attended a seminar at Edina High School about genocide in Darfur.  What really hit me in the speech was that men were more valuable than women.  The speaker gave an example that if you kill a man, it would cost you 100 camels but if you killed a women it would only cost you 50 camels.  This is very sad that men and women are not equal in their society but that is the way it is.  The seminar also talked about how men would rape a women while she was gathering firewood for her family.  That is so sad because if the women was cared then she could never marry again.  This is showing that men have power over women and some men use this to their advantage and that is not good.  The seminar was a great wealth of information and really informed me on what was happening in the world.  Stop Genocide in Darfur.  "Genocide in Darfur."  Genocide Intervention Network.  30 January 2009.  10 February 2009.
